A single-cask fourteen-year-old Panama ron from Alcoholes Del Istmo, finished in rye whiskey casks by Maison Ferrand for the Plantation line, with milk chocolate, baking spice and oak at a strong 51.9%.
Description
This Plantation single cask is a fourteen-year-old Panamanian ron distilled at Alcoholes Del Istmo and bottled by Maison Ferrand, the French house behind the Plantation and Planteray range. The twist is the finish: time in rye whiskey casks adds a spicier, sharper-edged frame than the usual bourbon-only ageing, and at a single-cask cask strength of 51.9% it has real intensity.
Distilled on a column still from molasses, it starts from the soft Panama base before the wood reshapes it. The nose carries milk chocolate, molasses and a spicy sweetness, the palate brings chocolate, baking spices and oak, and the rye character surfaces clearly on a spicy, whisky-tinged finish. Maison Ferrand bottlings are openly dosed, so a gentle sweetness underpins the cask spice rather than a bone-dry profile. The rye finish gives it more corners and grip than a classic bourbon-aged Panama, a more characterful take for drinkers who want the wood to do something distinctive.
