A Dominican solera built around a 21-year-old component rather than a flat age, this column-still ron leans soft and sweet, with cinnamon, cream toffee and tropical fruit bottled at a gentle navy-labelled 40%.
Description
Austrian Empire Navy Rum is a Dominican Republic ron assembled by Albert Michler Distillery as a solera, where younger spirit is folded into older over time so the bottle carries a trace of its 21-year-old component rather than a single declared age. The naming nods to navy heritage, but at 40% it sits well below true overproof, reading as an easy after-dinner pour rather than a fierce one.
Distilled on a column still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it follows the Spanish-style template where the barrel and a soft sweetness carry the flavour more than the spirit itself. Expect cinnamon and cream toffee on the nose, a caramel-led palate that stays mild and rounded, and a syrupy finish edged with coffee and ripe fruit. This is a sweeter, gentler step up from the house 18, made for relaxed sipping rather than dissection.
