A solera built Navy style rum carrying the Austrian Empire name, soft and sweet at 40% with vanilla, honey, caramel and dried fruit over light smoke and oak, an easygoing evening sipper rather than a fierce overproof.
Description
This Austrian Empire Navy Rum comes from the Albert Michler stable, blended in a solera in collaboration with Dominican house Oliver & Oliver. A solera is a fractional system where the oldest cask is never fully emptied, so the 18 on the label points to the oldest component rather than a flat age. The base is a light column still molasses rum, finished soft and sweet at 40%.
Despite the Navy billing, this is an approachable, easy sipping style. The nose is sweet with vanilla, plum and raisin, and the palate follows into honey, caramel and dried fruit with a wisp of smoke and gentle oak. The sweetness is clear and the smoke light, making it a rounded, relaxed pour rather than a bracing one. It suits an unhurried evening glass or a mixed drink, and sits comfortably within the dessert leaning Spanish house manner.
