Description
Picon Amer is the bitter aperitif version of the French orange liqueur first made by Gaetan Picon in 1837, built on bitter orange peel with gentian and quinine bearing cinchona bark. At 21% it is richer and more bitter than the Biere bottling, made to be sipped long or mixed.
The nose is intense orange with spicy herbs and a subtle cinchona note, the palate pleasantly bitter with candied orange, gentian and earthy herbs. Behind the bar it supplies bitter orange and quinine depth: it is the heart of the Basque American Picon Punch, served with a little grenadine, soda and a brandy float, cuts the sweetness in a beer as a Picon Biere, and lengthens simply with soda over ice. Serve it cold.
