Description
BEU New Moon Espadin is an agave spirit from Espadin capon (Agave angustifolia), made in the artesanal style in Mengoli, Miahuatlan, in the south of Oaxaca by maestro mezcalero Victor Ramos Lucas. BEU Spirits is a young venture with roots in Zurich and Berlin, and BEU means moon in Zapotec; only 588 bottles were filled, and the makers skipped formal mezcal certification on cost grounds, so it is sold as an agave spirit rather than as mezcal.
The capon agave, left to ripen eight to twelve years with its flower stalk cut so it keeps its sugars, is roasted in a stone covered conical underground oven, milled in a horse drawn mill, naturally fermented in pine vats and single distilled in copper pot stills. Bottled at 48%, it offers cooked sweet agave, fresh cut grass and a subtle litchi note, then caramelised raw sugar with mild sweetness and roasted green vegetables sliding into light smoke, closing on soft molasses.
