Description
Kujira 31 Years Old is a single grain whisky from Kumesen Distillery Co., Ltd. on Kumejima island, Okinawa Prefecture, released for the European market at 43%. It is among the longest-aged expressions in the Kujira range and benefits from a multi-cask maturation programme that sets it apart from the predominantly Ex-Bourbon older expressions.
The spirit has rested across Oloroso sherry, bourbon and virgin white oak casks for three decades under the subtropical Okinawan climate. That combination brings together the dried fruit and warming spice of the sherry wood, the vanilla and coconut of bourbon, and the clean structure of white oak, all integrated by thirty-one years of island heat that compresses extraction and rounds hard edges. The underlying rice grain spirit provides density without heaviness, and the result is a layered, mature whisky that draws on all three wood types without any single one dominating.
