Description
Kujira 20 Years Old is among the more mature expressions from Kumesen Distillery Co., Ltd., an awamori-rooted producer on Kumejima island in Okinawa Prefecture. Distilled from rice and aged for twenty years in bourbon casks, this global release at 43% represents one of the fuller expressions of what slow subtropical maturation does to a light grain spirit over a longer period.
The bourbon casks contribute a warm structural sweetness, and twenty years of Okinawan heat has layered in citrus, a leafy herbal lift and malt extract, the kind of concentrated, slightly savoury depth that emerges when tropical ageing extends into a second decade. The grain base remains clearly present beneath the wood influence, and the overall profile is drier and more considered than the younger Kujira expressions, showing the breadth of the range across its age statements.
