Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture produced whisky from 1956 until its closure in 2000, and the casks that survived in Ex-Bourbon wood give a different window onto the distillery's character than its celebrated sherry-matured releases. Cask #6431, distilled in 1980 and held for 33 years, was selected by La Maison du Whisky and bottled in 2013 for the French market.
Thirty-three years in an Ex-Bourbon cask draws vanilla, honey, dried citrus and orchard fruit from Karuizawa's small pot still spirit, with the long ageing adding a gentle spice and depth that American oak produces over extended maturation. At 62.1% cask strength, the La Maison du Whisky bottling offers a curated single cask example from a closed Japanese distillery that the French independent helped introduce to European collectors.
