Description
Kagoshima Mars 1984 is a single malt whisky from Hombo Shuzo's Kagoshima distillery in southern Kyushu, distilled in 1984 and bottled in 2009 after 25 years of maturation. It represents an early chapter for the Mars brand, years before the company opened its current Tsunuki site in the same prefecture, and stands as one of the few surviving expressions from that period of Kyushu malt production.
The liquid spent its full 25-year life in Oloroso sherry casks, a maturation that has left a deep imprint. Dark chocolate and dried fruit sit at the centre, supported by a leafy, slightly husky quality that speaks to the long ageing and the warmth of the southern climate. Nutty depth and a sherried sweetness round out the profile at 46%, where the cask influence remains rich without overwhelming the distillery character beneath it.
