Citrus peel and a thread of campfire smoke carry through this cask strength NAS single malt, distilled at Hombo Shuzo’s Mars Shinshu site in Nagano and matured a second time in the subtropical humidity of Yakushima island, giving an intensity that belies its clean mountain origins.

Description
Mars Shinshu is Hombo Shuzo's high-altitude distillery in Nagano, set in the Central Alps at Miyada and noted for its clean, precise new make. This NAS expression was distilled there and then transferred to Yakushima, a subtropical island off southern Kyushu, where warm temperatures and high humidity accelerate maturation and deepen the spirit in ways the cool mountain air cannot. Bottled in 2021 at 56% cask strength without chill filtration, it is a global release that makes the geographic contrast the centrepiece of the whisky.
Maturation in Ex-Bourbon casks draws out vanilla and soft cereal sweetness, while Yakushima's lush climate amplifies those notes into a denser, more forward profile. The flavour profile shows bright citrus alongside a distinct smoky thread, a combination of the bourbon oak's warmth and the intensity that tropical warehousing lends. In the house style of Mars Shinshu, the finish is clean and focused, the mountain character still present beneath the island ripeness.
