A 2010 cask-strength Colombian ron from Hacienda Coloma bottled at a hefty sixty one percent, dense with chocolate, dried fruit and allspice over a coffee-and-caramel finish, a rich and powerful pour that rewards a drop of water.
Description
Hacienda Coloma is a Colombian estate, and this 2010 cask-strength release shows a very different face from the soft, sweet rons the country is better known for. Bottled at sixty one percent, it trades easygoing smoothness for concentration and grip, a serious sipper for those who like their rum at full power.
Molasses-based and tropically matured, the high strength carries a dense weave of chocolate, dried fruit, allspice and toasted wood, with coffee and caramel lingering long on the finish. The Colombian house style of coffee, cocoa and dark fruit is all present, but the cask-strength bottling gives it a depth and intensity the standard expressions lack. A little water opens it considerably, releasing the spice and dried-fruit richness, making it as rewarding to explore slowly as it is bold straight from the bottle.
