Description
A 6 year old Glen Scotia, a distillery bottling, from 2017, cask 23/309-6, at 57.4%, 233 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a maritime Campbeltown malt, one of the last three of a town that once held thirty. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim.
Drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. Finished in a Red Wine cask, the wood building over the oily, coastal spirit. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the salty make. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character.
At its natural 57.4% it is concentrated. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with red berry and a dry spice from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. A long, oily finish carries a sea salt and a citrus. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
