Description
This official Glen Scotia, an 8 year old, from 2016, cask 3392, at 60%, 648 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world.
It was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. Finished in a Pedro Ximenez cask, the wood building over the oily, coastal spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit.
At a hearty 60% it carries real weight. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. The finish is rounded, salted and oily. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
