Description
A 6 year old Glen Scotia, a distillery bottling, from 2015, cask 871, at 58.1%, 257 bottles in all. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town.
Drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla over the brine. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the salty make. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it.
At a hearty 58.1% it carries real weight. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft citrus and a salted oil sit behind the cask. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
