Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 6 year old, from 2015, cask 21/42-8, at 58.4%, 306 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a coastal, briny Campbeltown malt, founded in 1832 on the Kintyre peninsula. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world.
Worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. Maturation came in a Red Wine cask, layered over the briny Glen Scotia make. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. The oily, coastal spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and brine to the fore. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
At its natural 58.4% it is concentrated. Sea salt, oil and a salted toffee, with red berry and a dry spice from the cask. Citrus, brine and a salted toffee fill the middle. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
