Description
This official Glen Scotia, a 7 year old, from 2013, cask 20/329-2, at 55.8%, 279 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt known for sea salt, oil and a salted toffee. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
The spirit was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. It was matured in a Rum cask, the wood working into the oily malt. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit.
At a hearty 55.8% it carries real weight. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft brown sugar and a tropical fruit from the cask. Citrus, brine and a salted toffee fill the middle. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
