An official release of Glen Scotia, an 11 year old, from 2008, cask 467, at 53.6%, 240 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt made on Crosshill Loch water in the Wee Toon. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom.
The spirit was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. Its water is drawn from Crosshill Loch above the town. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
At its natural 53.6% it is concentrated. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
