Description
This official Glen Scotia, a 12 year old, from 2007, cask 17/106-7, at 56.8%, 311 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
It was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the briny make lead. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time.
At its natural 56.8% it is concentrated. A coastal, oily sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is oily and briny, the coastal spirit shining through. It finishes long, briny and oily. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
