Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 10 year old, from 2007, cask 188, at 56.2%, 204 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a maritime Campbeltown malt, one of the last three of a town that once held thirty. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
The spirit was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the salt and oil. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit.
At its natural 56.2% it is concentrated. Salt, citrus and a soft toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. It finishes long, briny and oily. This is Glen Scotia's coastal, briny Campbeltown style.
