Description
This official Glen Scotia, a 19 year old, from 1999, cask 453, at 57.9%, 195 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from a town once called the whisky capital of the world. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
The spirit was made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, building the Campbeltown Glen Scotia style. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the salty, oily malt deepening. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world. It runs a single pair of stills and shell and tube condensers for a slow, oily make.
At a natural 57.9% it is full and oily. A briny, oily coastal fruit, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a maritime Campbeltown single malt.
