Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 30 year old, from 1991, at 46.7%. Glen Scotia is a salty, oily Campbeltown malt from the west coast of Scotland. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim.
Distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Ethereal and fragile, decades draw the oily malt to a waxy, briny delicacy of sotolon, dried fruit and old oak. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the briny Campbeltown spirit. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
Bottled at 46.7%, it is rounded. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is oily and briny, the coastal spirit shining through. A briny finish ends on citrus and a soft oak. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
