Description
A Fettercairn of a 14 year old chosen by the bottler Alba Import, distilled in 2008, bottled at 46%. Fettercairn is a fruity Highland single malt made at one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries, founded in 1824. Its stills carry unique cooling rings, copper tubes that drench them in cold mountain water.
Distilled from unpeated malt in stills cooled by their copper rings, giving the light, pineapple led Highland spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper pineapple and pear. The clean, fruity spirit shows the cask clearly, vanilla and fruit to the fore. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Highland spirit. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit.
At 46% it is smooth and fruity. Pineapple, mango and a gentle honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Mango, citrus and a creamy vanilla fill the middle. The close is light and warming, fruit over a gentle oak. This is the cooling ring malt of the Mearns.
