Description
An official release of Fettercairn, a 16 year old, at 46.4%. Fettercairn is a Highland single malt from Whyte and Mackay, known for pineapple and tropical fruit. Its water comes from springs in the Grampian and Cairngorm mountains above the distillery.
The spirit was drawn off the stills, the cooling rings raising reflux for a fruity spirit, giving the light, pineapple led Highland spirit. Finished in a Pedro Ximenez cask, the wood building over the fruity, light spirit. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the fruit deepening over a soft spice. Long ageing turns the fresh tropical fruit towards dried mango, coffee and a soft spice. It was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, who turned a corn mill at Nethermill into a distillery. It has been owned by Whyte and Mackay since 1973. The cooling rings raise reflux and copper contact, so only the lightest vapours rise, for a tropical spirit.
At an approachable 46.4% it is light and tropical. Mango, citrus and a soft honey, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. Mango, citrus and a creamy vanilla fill the middle. Citrus, fruit and a soft oak see out the finish. This is a light, tropical Highland single malt.
