Description
This Deanston was bottled by the Campbeltown house Cadenhead, a 19 year old, distilled in 1994, bottled at 56.4%, one of 846 bottles. Deanston is a waxy, honeyed Highland malt made in a former mill on the banks of the Teith. It draws water from the River Teith, which also drives the turbine that powers the distillery.
Worked through a long ferment and the bulbous stills for a waxy, fruity make, giving the soft, malty Highland spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla and a soft honey. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins add a gentle, drying grip to the honey. River Teith water and a long ferment give the fruity, estery Deanston make. The site was the Adelphi cotton mill, built in 1785 by Sir Richard Arkwright and turned to whisky in 1965. It was mothballed in 1982 and revived in 1990 under Burn Stewart. Its old weaving shed, once full of looms, is now a cool stone warehouse for the casks.
At cask strength 56.4% it is full bodied. A waxy, malty sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked apple and a gentle clove lift it. A honeyed finish ends on apple and a fiery oak spice. This is the cotton mill malt of the River Teith.
