Description
Dalmore from the distillery, at 45%, 499 bottles in all. Dalmore was founded in 1839 at Alness, and wears the twelve pointed Royal Stag of the Mackenzie clan. Its long time master distiller Richard Paterson, known as The Nose, shaped the rich house style.
The spirit was made in copper stills whose water jackets give a heavy make, for the rich, full bodied make Dalmore is known for. A Madeira cask added raisin, orange and a caramelised nuttiness. No age is given, but vanillin vanilla and a rich, sherried malt are well integrated. The water jacketed stills give a heavy spirit that soaks up sherry over a long maturation. The distillery was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson on the Cromarty Firth at Alness. It is owned by Whyte and Mackay, and its King Alexander III bottling nods to the clan legend. Long ageing turns the fresh orange towards marmalade, dark chocolate, coffee and a warm spice.
At an approachable 45% it is soft and easy. Orange, treacle and a warm spice, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orange and a treacly malt sit behind the cask. Dried fruit, orange and a treacly oak see out the finish. This is a sherried Highland single malt of real depth.
