A Clynelish of a 12 year old from the bottler Murray McDavid, at 46%. Candle wax, lemon and a coastal salt run through it, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. The original Clynelish of 1819 became Brora, closed in 1983 and revived in 2021. Most of its make goes to blending, with a 14 year old the flagship. This is Clynelish’s oily, coastal Highland style.

Description
The bottler Murray McDavid bottled this Clynelish, a 12 year old, distilled in 1994, from cask PX 12371, bottled at 46%, one of 712 bottles. Clynelish is the coastal Highland malt whose waxiness has made it a cult favourite. Water comes from the Clynemilton Burn, the spirit drawn off three wash and three spirit stills.
The spirit was distilled for the waxy, oily spirit Clynelish is known for, for a maritime spirit with a beeswax richness. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut over the wax. By the integrating teens congeners fade and esters build, the waxy, oily spirit growing rounder. The oily, waxy texture is the signature that blenders prize above all. Years in oak round the spirit, the citrus deepening to orange and tropical fruit. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed.
Bottled at 46%, it is rounded. The famous wax over lemon and orange, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the citrus carried on a waxy body. The close is long, wax over a citrus lift. This is the waxy heart of Johnnie Walker Gold.
