Description
Excalibur 1973 MBl (Meadowside Blending) is a blended Scotch from Meadowside Blending. It marries malt and grain whiskies, with Highland malt such as Clynelish for a waxy depth. The famous wax is said to come from the build up in the distillery's feints receivers.
Clynelish's famous wax is the kind of malt that lifts a blend. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the waxy spirit. Clynelish wax and a maritime salt run through the maturing spirit. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. The original Clynelish was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford during the Highland Clearances. The oily, waxy texture is the signature that blenders prize above all. It is the heart malt of Johnnie Walker Gold Label, and a sought after single malt in its own right. Active wood frames the citrus without smothering the waxy texture. Clynelish is unpeated, its character built on texture, citrus and coast rather than smoke.
At 40.3% it is soft and waxy. A waxy, oily texture runs through it, with citrus, honey and a coastal lift. Soft citrus and a honeyed wax sit behind the cask. It finishes oily, waxy and bright. A characterful blended Scotch.
