Description

A 10 year old Caol Ila, this distilled in 2011 from the bottler WhiskyNerds, from cask 5846, bottled at 57.5%, one of 326 bottles. Caol Ila is a workhorse of the blending halls and a favourite of malt drinkers. Its peated character is built on malt smoked to a medium level of phenols.

Here the spirit was drawn off the distillery's six tall stills from peated barley, for a smoky spirit with a citrus lift. A sherry cask gave dried fruit and a dark, nutty sweetness. By the integrating teens harsher congeners fade and ethyl esters build, lending a riper citrus over the softening peat. Active wood frames the smoke without smothering the citrus beneath. The spirit's high notes of lemon and grass survive even long maturation. The malt is medium peated, giving a cleaner smoke than the south shore Islays. The lighter style means the cask and the citrus speak alongside the peat.

Bottled at a cask strength 57.5%, it is intense. Wood smoke, lemon zest and brine, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. An oily smoke coats the palate, citrus and brine behind. A long, briny finish ends on lemon and soft smoke. This is an Islay malt that wears its smoke lightly.
