This Caol Ila was bottled by the Elgin house Gordon and MacPhail, a 13 year old, at 40%. The peat here is bright and lemony over an oily, maritime body. It is the most independently bottled of all the Islay malts. Most of its make goes into the Johnnie Walker blends. An east coast Islay distillery on the narrow Sound of Islay. This is a finely judged Islay single malt.

Description
The Elgin house Gordon and MacPhail bottled this Caol Ila, a 13 year old, distilled in 1977, bottled at 40%. Caol Ila is among the most widely traded of Islay's single malts. A few weeks each year the distillery runs an unpeated, Highland style spirit.
It was drawn off the distillery's six tall stills from peated barley, for a clean, coastal, oily make. A tired refill cask added little but time, the make speaking clearly. Through integration the spirit and cask settle, lactone coconut and a soft vanillin balancing the easing phenols. The cool Islay air gives a slow, steady maturation by the shore. The make balances phenolic smoke against a bright, oily citrus. Smoked citrus and a saline minerality are the hallmarks of the make. The spirit's high notes of lemon and grass survive even long maturation. Its peated character is built on malt smoked to a medium level of phenols.
At 40% it is soft, oily and bright. Ashy smoke, lemon oil and a saline tang, with a gentle oak sweetness beneath. The oily body carries the smoke long and clean. Ash, lemon and brine draw out the close. This is a clean, smoky Islay single malt from Caol Ila.
