Its tall stills give a lighter, cleaner island spirit. Islay’s quiet giant, vast yet refined. A workhorse of the blending halls and a favourite of malt drinkers. This is an Islay malt of clean smoke and bright citrus.

From Scotland's oldest independent bottler Cadenhead's, a 14 year old Caol Ila, distilled in 2000, bottled at 54.4%, one of 576 bottles. Caol Ila is the lighter, more elegant face of Islay smoke. Port Askaig is a tiny settlement on the rugged east coast of Islay.

Made from medium peated malt for a clean, smoky spirit, for the light, maritime smoke Caol Ila is known for. A fresh bourbon barrel lent vanilla, coconut and a fuller body. Integration sees eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) fold into the spirit, the medicinal smoke gentler now. Cool, damp warehousing slows the loss of the angel's share over the years. The spirit's high notes of lemon and grass survive even long maturation. A gentle vanillin sweetness from the oak balances the coastal phenols. The warehouses are ranged along the rocky shore at the water's edge.

At cask strength 54.4% it is muscular. A clean maritime smoke with lemon and brine, with a light vanilla and a touch of coconut. The palate is oily and smoky, with a green citrus lift. The smoke fades slow over citrus and a mineral tang. This is Caol Ila's lighter, maritime Islay smoke.
