Description
A distillery bottling of Tormore, a 13 year old from 2012, drawn from cask 921177 and bottled at 52.5%. Just 216 bottles were filled. Tormore was built in 1958 by Long John Distillers beneath the Cromdale Hills in Speyside, and it was the first new malt distillery of the 20th century. It was granted listed building status in 1986, rare for a distillery so young.
The spirit was run through purifier stills for a light, clean spirit, to build a clean, citrussy, almond edged character. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. Past a decade the nut deepens into almond, honey and a riper orchard fruit. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the nutty, citrussy core over time. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand. Most of the spirit matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon wood. The distillery sits near Grantown-on-Spey, in sight of the Cromdale Hills.
Bottled at a cask strength 52.5%, it is rich. A nutty, orchard fruit sweetness sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. A green apple and a citrus note lift it. It closes clean, nutty and dry. This is the architectural jewel of Speyside in a glass.
