Description
An official Tomatin single malt, aged 12 year old from 2002 and bottled at 46%. The outturn was 1500 bottles. Tomatin is a Highland single malt distilled in the hills south of Inverness, where the distillery was founded in 1897. Water comes from the Allt na Frithe, the burn of the deer, in the Monadhliath hills.
It was drawn off copper pot stills fed by the burn of the deer, for a soft, apple and pear scented spirit. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Mid age brings a deeper honey and a riper orchard fruit. The mellow make leans on the cask for much of its colour and flavour. An old cattle drovers' road ran through Tomatin, and whisky was made here long before the distillery. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades.
At 46% it is smooth and fruity. A soft, fruity sweetness, and sherried dried fruit and a nutty edge come through. The texture is soft and round, the fruit lifted by honey. The finish runs gentle, fruity and mellow. This is a fruity Highland single malt from the Monadhliath hills.
