Description
This Tomatin, an official release matured to 10 year old and bottled at 43%. Tomatin is a Highland single malt distilled in the hills south of Inverness, where the distillery was founded in 1897. By 1974 Tomatin ran twenty three stills and was the largest malt distillery in Scotland.
It was worked through onion stills for a light, fruity spirit, for the soft, fruity Highland make Tomatin is known for. It was matured in ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and a soft honey. Younger here, it keeps a light, fruity freshness over soft honey. The unpeated spirit lets the wood and the fruit speak without smoke. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades. The Antiquary blend came into the group through the blender J and W Hardie. Malt is bought in, the distillery's own floor maltings having closed in the 1980s.
Reduced to 43%, it is soft. A mellow, fruity character, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. Soft orchard fruit and honey sit behind the cask. The close is soft, fruit over gentle oak. This is Tomatin's soft, fruity Highland style.
