Description
Claxton's bottled this Tamnavulin single malt matured to 6 year old from 2016 and bottled at 50%. Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers in the heart of Speyside on the Livet, and it long supplied the Whyte and Mackay blends. Water comes from the Easterton Spring, filtered through the surrounding limestone.
The spirit was made in copper pot stills with purifiers that keep the spirit light, for a light, fruity make of real charm. A Port cask gave a plum and red berry depth. At a youthful age the orchard fruit is lively and the malt soft. Long, gentle ageing turns the orchard fruit towards honey and soft spice. The name is Gaelic for mill on the hill, a nod to the old mill on its grounds. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul. The light, clean make takes a cask finish particularly well.
At a natural 50% it is full and fruity. The Port cask adds plum and red berry, and vanilla and a light cream from the barrel, with apple, pear and a soft honey. The mouthfeel is soft, the fruit carried on a honeyed body. A long, honeyed finish carries a fruity lift. This is a clean, fruity malt from the Livet glen.
