Description
Single malt Springbank, an independent Cadenhead's bottling matured to 32 year old from 1967 and bottled at 44.6%. Just 228 bottles were filled. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, near the head of its sea loch.
It was distilled the Springbank way, two and a half times from floor malted barley, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. At three decades and more it is rich and oily, tropical fruit, beeswax and salt in a deep, old malt. Refill oak lets the distillery character lead, all oily weight and coastal salt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch.
At cask strength 44.6% it is muscular. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on dried fruit and a walnut richness. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
