Description
This Springbank, an official release and bottled at 46%. The Springbank distillery, a family distillery since 1828, is one of the last working distilleries of old Campbeltown. Uniquely in Scotch, every drop is floor malted, distilled, matured and bottled on the one site.
The make was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and run into cast iron worm tubs. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. Carrying no age, it leans on an oily weight and a coastal complexity. Sea air works into the warehouses, lending a saline thread as the whisky breathes. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations.
At 46% it is clean and characterful. An oily, maritime character with light peat are layered with a vanilla and toffee sweetness. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. It closes long, oily and salty. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
