A distillery bottling of Springbank, aged 50 year old and bottled at 37.8%. Springbank, distilling since 1828 in Campbeltown, is a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Each bottling is filled and labelled in Campbeltown rather than shipped away.
This was run through the distillery's part triple distillation, the malt floor malted and gently peated, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. Very old Campbeltown make turns profound, oily and tropical with a coastal salt. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Quality and tradition, not volume, have always been the watchwords here. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak.
At an easy 37.8% it is gentle. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on vanilla, cream and light coconut. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
