Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank, a 30 year old release and bottled at 46%. The outturn was 1400 bottles. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Water comes from Crosshill Loch, the barley malted on the distillery's own floors.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and worm tub cooled in the old way. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. Very old Campbeltown make turns profound, oily and tropical with a coastal salt. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
At an approachable 46% it is balanced. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on raisin, fig and a vanilla sweetness. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a salty body. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is the most traditional malt in Scotch.
