Description
An official Springbank single malt matured to 10 year old from 2000, drawn from cask 77 and bottled at 54.8%. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
It was made by Springbank's singular two and a half times distillation, and slowly worm tub cooled. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. At a youthful age the make is lively, salty and full of character. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch.
At a hearty 54.8% it carries real weight. Brine, wax and a light peat note sit over a sherried dried fruit and nuts. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. The finish runs deep, briny and warm. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
