Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank matured to 26 year old from 1993 and bottled at 51.1%. A release of 432 bottles. The Springbank distillery, in Mitchell family hands since 1828, is a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Each bottling is filled and labelled in Campbeltown rather than shipped away.
The make was run two and a half times through the stills from lightly peated malt, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
Undiluted at 51.1%, it is intense. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on creamy vanilla and oak sweetness. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A long finish smoulders on salt and oil. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
