Springbank Wood Expressions 16 Years Old 1991

This official Springbank single malt, a 16 year old release from 1991 and bottled at 54.2%. Just 5100 bottles were filled. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.

It was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A Rum cask shaped it, lending brown sugar and a tropical lift. Past a decade the oily spirit deepens, fruit and salt knitting with the oak. Long maturation suits the heavy, characterful make, the cask knitting slowly with the spirit. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make.

At its natural 54.2% it is concentrated. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet brown sugar, banana and a tropical lift from the cask. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. It finishes deep, complex and maritime. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
