Description
This Springbank, an official release, a 16 year old Campbeltown malt from 2000 and bottled at 48.1%. The outturn was 240 bottles. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, still owned by the Mitchell family, five generations on. Uniquely in Scotch, every drop is floor malted, distilled, matured and bottled on the one site.
It was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and run into cast iron worm tubs. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the spirit. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased.
At cask strength 48.1% it is muscular. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet creamy vanilla and oak sweetness from the cask. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
