Description
An official Springbank single malt matured to 10 year old, drawn from cask 815 and bottled at 46%. The outturn was 371 bottles. Established in 1828, Springbank is a survivor of Campbeltown's great whisky era. Concerto barley is malted on the floors and kilned in the distillery's own kiln.
The spirit was drawn off after two and a half distillations of gently peated malt, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the oily fruit. At this age the spirit is vivid and oily, the fruit and salt to the fore. Refill oak lets the distillery character lead, all oily weight and coastal salt. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
At 46% it is supple and briny. Brine, wax and a light peat note sit over a vanilla and toffee sweetness. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. Salt and oily fruit see out a long finish. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
