Description
This Longrow, an official release, an 18 year old Campbeltown malt and bottled at 46%. A release of 4500 bottles. Springbank, founded in 1828 in Campbeltown, is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Small output and a cult following keep its bottles allocated and keenly sought.
This was distilled twice from malt kilned over plenty of peat, the vapour cooled in worm tubs. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the maritime malt. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart.
At an approachable 46% it is balanced. Heavy smoke over brine and wax are layered with dried fruit and a vanilla oak. Soft fruit and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. The close is rich, fruit over a saline depth. This is a smoky, maritime Campbeltown single malt.
