Description
This Scapa, an official release, a 16 year old release and bottled at 40%. Founded in 1885 on Orkney's Mainland by Scapa Flow, Scapa is Orkney's unpeated island malt. For decades the malt fed the Ballantine's and Teacher's blends before its single malt fame.
The spirit was run through the only Lomond still left in Scotch and a traditional spirit still, to build a soft, unpeated island character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. Around twelve to sixteen years the malt gains a fuller honey over the fruit. The unpeated make lets the cask and the fruit speak without smoke. Island maturation by the sea lends a faint salt air to the honeyed spirit. The Lomond still is the only one of its kind still making Scotch whisky. Orkney's history runs back seven thousand years, from Neolithic times to Norse rule. The creamy, fruit forward style sets Scapa apart from its smoky island neighbours.
At an easy 40% it is gentle. Creamy honey and ripe pear sit alongside soft vanilla and cream from the cask. A ripe melon and a gentle spice lift it. It finishes clean, honeyed and soft. This is the soft Orkney malt by Scapa Flow.
