Description
A Scapa single malt, selected and bottled by Silver Seal matured to 25 year old from 1975 and bottled at 50%. A release of 130 bottles. Founded in 1885 on Orkney's Mainland by Scapa Flow, Scapa is Orkney's unpeated island malt. Mothballed in 1994, the distillery was revived and fully restored by Pernod Ricard in 2005.
The spirit was run through the only Lomond still left in Scotch and a traditional spirit still, to build a soft, unpeated island character. First fill American oak held it, layering vanilla and honey over the fruit. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied tropical fruit and a mellow maritime note. Island maturation by Scapa Flow lends a faint salt air note as the whisky breathes. A long fermentation of up to seventy hours coaxes out the fruity esters. Mothballed in 1994, Scapa was restored and revived by Pernod Ricard in 2005. The malt long fed the Ballantine's and Teacher's blends before its own fame grew.
Undiluted at 50%, it is layered. Honeyed vanilla and ripe fruit meet soft vanilla and cream from the cask. The mouthfeel is oily, the honey carried on a creamy body. The finish is deep, oily and fruity. This is the gentle, unpeated face of Orkney whisky.
