Description
This Old Pulteney was from the independent bottler Signatory Vintage, a 13 year old from 2008, drawn from cask 800074 and bottled at 46%. 290 bottles in all. Pulteney, first licensed in 1826 beside the harbour at Wick in the far north, Inver House has run it as a flagship malt since 1995. Robert Cumming brought the distillery back to life in 1951 after two decades silent.
The spirit was made in copper stills of singular shape, fed by soft northern water, and matured on the Caithness coast for a salty lift. An American oak cask shaped it, flattering the waxy, honeyed make. By this age the waxy, honeyed core settles in over the brine. A gentle, unhurried maturation suits the waxy, honeyed Pulteney character. Sea air works into the warehouses, a saline thread that marks the house style. For decades this was the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland. It is one of the last true urban distilleries, set among the streets of Pulteneytown.
At 46% it is soft, waxy and coastal. Vanilla and a little cream from the barrel, with brine and a honeyed wax. A crisp apple and a sea salt edge lift it. Salt, honey and oak draw out the close. This is a honeyed coastal malt from Caithness.
