Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 2013 as the Silveroak 22 year old from 1990 vintage stock, with 3600 bottles released across the global travel retail market at cask strength of 50.9%. The Silveroak release combines American oak ex Bourbon and European oak Oloroso casks, sitting in the distillery's travel retail premium tier alongside the wider long matured lineup.
Distilled in 1990 from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water from the Kilpatrick Hills, the wash was fermented around 62 hours across Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before triple distillation. Auchentoshan runs every drop through three copper pot stills, with the intermediate and spirit stages lifting cut to around 81% ABV. The extra copper contact and high cut strip sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, and other light esters, giving a clean spirit base filled into both American oak ex Bourbon and European oak Oloroso casks.
The ex Bourbon stage built vanillin from lignin breakdown alongside cis and trans oak lactones, layering vanilla, coconut, and char derived furfural. Oloroso European oak then added oxidative chemistry: ellagitannins and gallic acid bring dried walnut and grip, while acetaldehyde and syringaldehyde develop leathery rancio. Fermentation derived sotolon contributes dried fig and curry leaf, integrating both cask types with the lighter triple distilled spirit at 50.9%.
