Description
Bottled by Douglas Laing in 2015 as a 30 year old single cask release in the Xtra Old Particular range, drawn from cask DL 10702 of 1984 vintage Auchentoshan with 225 bottles distributed to the European market at cask strength. The Xtra Old Particular range is Douglas Laing's premium tier for long matured single casks of 25 years and above, sitting above the regular Old Particular line.
Distilled in 1984 at the point of transition into Morrison Bowmore ownership, the wash was made from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water from the Kilpatrick Hills, fermented around 62 hours in Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks. Auchentoshan triple distils every drop through three copper pot stills, with the intermediate and spirit stages lifting cut to around 81% ABV. The extra copper contact and higher final strength strip sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, and other light esters, giving a clean spirit filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak cask.
Thirty years in temperate maturation delivered controlled oak extraction. Vanillin from lignin breakdown gave vanilla, cis and trans oak lactones added coconut and sweet wood, and char layer interaction produced furfural with Maillard derived caramelised sugars. Holding 53.9% across three decades indicates a tight cask and slow evaporative loss, with tertiary stage ester transformation layering polished fruit over the lighter triple distilled spirit base.
