Auchentoshan Vintage Release 37 Years Old 1974

Bottled by Auchentoshan in 2012 as a single cask 37 year old from 1974 vintage stock, with 110 bottles drawn from cask 5613 at natural strength for the German market. The Vintage Release tier presents long matured single casks selected from the distillery's archive, sitting alongside the decanter releases at the top of the official lineup.

Distilled in 1974 during the Eadie Cairns ownership era, the wash was made from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water and fermented around 62 hours in Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks. Auchentoshan runs every drop through wash, intermediate, and spirit pot stills, with the third pass collecting at around 81% ABV. This higher cut and increased copper contact strip sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating light esters, leaving a delicate spirit filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak cask for on site dunnage maturation.

Thirty seven years in temperate Lowland warehousing delivered controlled oak interaction. Lignin breakdown drove vanillin, cis and trans oak lactones built coconut and sweet wood, and slow char contact released furfural with Maillard caramelised sugars. Tertiary stage maturation transforms ethyl esters and concentrates lactones, giving a polished, integrated profile at 43.3% natural strength.
